7 Things Every Independent Artist Should Be Doing Daily
Jaz from the RepostExchange Team

It’s never been easier to become a musician.

With DAWs, loop packs and YouTube tutorials… anyone with a computer and access to the internet can learn to make music.

But, with so many people trying to compete for a slice of the pie…

How can you make sure that your music gets noticed and avoid becoming another failed artist with 10 fans on SoundCloud?

Here are the seven things you can do each day to give your music career the best chance of success:

Connect with fans

Your fanbase is your biggest asset. The more fans you have, the more people will come to your show. And, the more money you can charge to perform.

That's why it's important to make sure that you spend time connecting with them online. On Instagram. On Twitter and any other platform where your fans hang out online such as SoundCloud.

Make it a priority to respond to everyone who leaves you a comment or a message. It’s a great way to build a relationship. And, these are the people that will share you music with their friends helping you to grow.

Split creativity from business

Although you are following your passion as an artist, you have to remember that the music industry — is an industry. And, that means you need to treat it like one if you want any chance at success.

If you’re finding it hard to mix music and business, try splitting up your time. Schedule specific blocks of time each day just to focus on business. For example one hour in the morning for social media. And, one hour in the afternoon to email venues about a gig.

It may seem trivial structuring your time, but, sticking with it can lead to big results in the long run.

Stay in the loop

The world is changing — rapidly. Unless you want to get left behind, you need to stay on the pulse.

That means subscribing to publications and keeping up to date with the latest happenings in the music, marketing and technology industry so you never miss a trick.

Keeping yourself in the loop will help you stay one step ahead, giving you an advantage over everyone else.

Help others

Ever see those stalls in the mall handing out free pretzels? I have some news for you. They’re doing it out of the kindness of their heart.

The real reason is because they know that when you give someone something for free, or help them out… They’re more likely to return the favour. This works in all walks of life — not just the pretzel game.

Regularly listen to tracks from like-minded artists. Give them feedback. You’ll be surprised how these simple acts will start coming back to you.

Expand your listening

There comes a time in every artist's career when you hit some kind of creative block.

Maybe your feeling uninspired? Or like you’ve lost your passion?

Expanding your listening helps you to stay inspired. Classical music may not be your cup of tea, but learning to appreciate other genres outside of your own can help give your own music more depth

Build your brand

It’s important to establish a strong brand as early as you can in your career. Without it, standing out from the crowd will be almost impossible.

Here are a few key things to keep in mind when defining your brand:

  • How do you want to be seen by your audience?
  • What content to post on social media? How does it reflect your values?
  • What language will your use when interacting with your fans?
  • Does all your artwork have a defined style?
  • Does your personal image (hair, clothing, etc.) match with what your intended audience expects to see?

Once you have your brand and have defined all the attributes. Infuse it into everything you do — consistently.

Build your fanbase

Building a fanbase is something every independent artist needs to be doing constantly.

Fans are the ones who buy your records, share you music and come to your gigs. Having direct contact with each of them means you don’t need to rely else to take you where you want to go.

It’s no secret — getting gigs and selling music can be an uphill struggle. But with just 1000 true fans, many artists are able to turn music into their full time career. And, so can you!
