8 tips on how to create your own Artist Brand Identity

Creating a strong brand identity is essential for any artist looking to stand out in the crowded music industry. Your brand is more than just your music; it’s your story, your image, and your promise to your fans. It is who you are and what you stand for. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to craft a compelling artist brand identity.

1. Define Your Unique Selling Point (USP)

Your USP is what sets you apart from other artists. It’s the core of your brand identity. It explains what makes you unique as an artist. This goes beyond the innovation in your music, like blending genres and vocal style etc. This is about your story, your persona, your message and values. Superfans will have to be able to align with all of these, so make sure you’re putting your USP out there for people to recognise and become part of your tribe!

2. Tell Your Story

Your story is a powerful tool to connect with your audience on a deeper level. Share your journey, struggles, and successes. Where did you come from? What inspired you to start making music? What obstacles have you overcome and how did you do it? These are all things fans can resonate with. Be authentic so you build trust and loyalty to your tribe.

3. Understand Your Audience

Your brand should resonate with your target audience. Conduct research to understand who they are (age, gender, location, interests, etc.) and how they consume (streaming platforms, live shows, social media, etc.). A pro tip is to create a fan persona to visualise your typical fan. Give them a name and a full backstory. Use your creative storytelling to materialise your typical fan, so you can speak to them directly moving forward.

4. Craft Your Visual Identity

Your visual identity includes your logo, colour scheme, typography, and overall aesthetic. This should reflect everything we mentioned in the USP section. Also remember that consistency is key. Use your visual elements across all platforms to make each of your corners of the internet feel like home.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Logo: Use a simple, memorable design that represents your brand.
  • Typography: Select fonts that complement your music style.
  • Colour Scheme: Choose colours that evoke the emotions you want to convey.
  • Clothing and makeup: Select clothing and makeup that complements your music style and colour scheme.

5. Develop Your Brand Voice

Your brand voice is how you communicate with your audience. It should be consistent across all channels, including social media, newsletters, and interviews. Decide if your tone is casual, formal, playful, or serious. Make sure you use language that resonates with your audience.

It can be good to create a style guide to maintain consistency in your communication, especially once you start to work with a team. You want to make sure that everything in relation to your artist brand is consistently communicated, even when it’s not you who is doing the talking.

6. Create a Strong Online Presence

Your online presence is often the first point of contact with your audience. Ensure it reflects your brand identity. A professional website with your music, bio, tour dates, and merchandise is crucial when you want to make it big. But it might be worth being candid with where you are in your career right now and only use a linktree or SoundCloud profile as your website.

It goes without saying that social media is probably the most important factor in your online presence nowadays. Make sure you share a mix of behind-the-scenes glimpses, and personal updates in your stories to create connection and a sense of belonging for your followers. Add those stories to your IG highlights so potential followers can get a feel for what they’ll get when they hit the follow button and also to get them up to speed on what you’ve been up to and what your journey has been so far.

For Reels and TikToks we recommend following artists that are a bit further ahead in their career than you and take what they are doing and put your own spin to it. This way you can easily stay up with the trends without having to get help from a social media agency. Make sure you pick those inspirations realistically and don’t take Drake or Taylor Swift as your content guide. We’re talking roughly 1k followers more than you.

7. Engage with Your Fans

Building a strong relationship with your fans is crucial for a successful brand. Make sure you ALWAYS respond to comments, messages, and fan content. You can show appreciation to your fans through live interactions and shoutouts, and create a sense of community through encouraging and valuing fan feedback.

8. Monitor and Adapt

Your brand identity should evolve with your career and audience. Use analytical tools on the platforms you’re using to track your brand’s performance and audience engagement. Regularly seek and analyse fan feedback through polls and asking questions. Stay updated with industry trends and adapt your strategy accordingly. Be open to change and willing to refine your brand as needed.

Creating a strong artist brand identity is a continuous process that requires introspection, creativity, and engagement. By defining your unique qualities, understanding your audience, and consistently conveying your brand message, you can build a loyal fan base and a memorable presence in the music industry. Remember, your brand is your story – make it compelling, authentic, and uniquely yours.
