In the Mix: Angie Alfarez
Jaz from the RepostExchange Team

This week, we chat with Dutch techno DJ and producer Angie Alfarez, who shares how her lifelong immersion in music led her to pursue a career in electronic music. A pivotal moment at Awakenings, where she witnessed Richie Hawtin perform, inspired her to dive into the world of techno. Angie discusses her creative process, her influences, and her aspirations to perform at some of the world’s top festivals, as she continues to carve out a space in the techno scene.

How did you first get into DJing, and what inspired you to pursue it as a career?

It was about 2 years ago.

I have been involved in music all of my life as my Dad is a music producer and I have been in recording studios from the day I was born.

Music has been a great part of my life in general because it was always around me and my parents played a lot of music at home

As I grew older my interest in electronic music became more and more prominent but when I visited Awakenings and heard Richie Hawtin playing I decided to pursue a career as a Techno DJ /Producer

Who were your biggest musical influences growing up?

I have to say pop legends like Michael Jackson, Prince, and Jimmy Hendrix but also bands like Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode to name a few.

If you could DJ any event in the world, which one would it be and why?

There are too many to choose from! There are a lot of amazing festivals but Timewarp, Sónar, Glastonbury, and Burning Man are definitely on my bucket list.

How do you approach creating a new mix? Is there a story or theme you often follow?

100 per cent, I always try to tell a story. First of all, there are a lot of good producers out there so I spend a lot of time searching for new music and sound, I have a weekly radio show on Beats2dance.com so I want to play new music, bangers and classics in a set. I always build up in the middle. I go a little down and then up again. I heard a DJ one time saying it’s like a balloon which you inflate then you let some air out and then you inflate again until it bursts and you end with a bang.

What's the most challenging part of putting together a cohesive mix?

I think it’s the sound of all the different tracks, not all tracks (even if they are bangers) are mixed at the same level and sound, so sometimes it just doesn’t work and you don’t want to have a drop in the mix. Not everything can be solved by just putting the volume up and down or by turning the eq knobs, so you have to really know your records and know what their limitations are.

What software or equipment do you prefer using when recording your mixes?

I mostly just record straight from the DJM but afterwards, I import it in my DAW (Pro Tools) and glue it with some nice compression, saturation and EQ.

What advice would you give to any budding DJs out there?

Practice, practice, and practice! Have fun (a lot of it) and avoid the Beatport top 100 😊 Just search for new tracks everywhere so you develop your own identity, but then again it’s a no-brainer.

Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations we should be on the lookout for?

Well, I’m working on a lot of new tracks at the moment, so watch out!

How do you decide which tracks or artists to repost? Do you have certain criteria?

They have to be original and well-produced (sound is important).

Can you share a specific track or mix that gained significant traction due to RepostExchange?

I have to say that all of my mixes gained a lot of attention through RepostExchange.
