In the Mix: BEKKV
Jaz from the RepostExchange Team

This week, we caught up with BEKKV, a rising dubstep DJ from Raleigh, NC who went from first festival in 2021 to chasing that stage life ever since. Her roots are a mix of hip hop and alt rock (shoutout to Lil Wayne and My Chemical Romance), but these days she’s all about heavy drops, wubby bass, and making real connections in the scene. We had a quick catch-up about dream sets, mixing rituals, and why reposting your friends is actually one of the best bits of being on RepostExchange.

How did you first get into DJing, and what inspired you to pursue it as a career?

I first got into DJing after attending my first festival in 2021, I immediately knew I wanted to be on stage one day. It’s not a career yet but that’s definitely the goal!

Who were your biggest musical influences growing up?

From early on I was exposed to so many different types of genres, but what resonated with me most was hip hop and alternative rock music. If you looked at old playlists from when I was younger you’d definitely see Lil Wayne and My Chemical Romance played out a lot.

If you could DJ any event in the world, which one would it be and why?

Lost Lands Festival, hands down. It’s the most legendary dubstep/bass festival and I would be geeked if I saw myself on the lineup.

How do you approach creating a new mix? Is there a story or theme you often follow?

It really depends on my mood and how much energy I need to release. Sometimes I have a mix where I want to vibe and experiment more and with those, I like to create a flow that intertwines my usual hardstyle with wubby bass seamlessly.

What's the most challenging part of putting together a cohesive mix?

I think this might be a cliche answer, but choosing which songs will go in them. Mostly I have the problem of having to choose between way too many, but sometimes I’m really picky and I'm searching a while for the perfect fit.

What software or equipment do you prefer using when recording your mixes?

I put my mixes together on my DDJ-200 using rekordbox and then end up on CDJ-3000s to record.

What advice would you give to any budding DJs out there?

Go out and make as many genuine connections as you can. Being in the scene and present is so important. & secondly, be careful of taking advice from people whom aren’t where you want to be.

How do you handle song requests during a live set?

It actually hasn’t happened to me. & I would probably attribute that to the culture of the dubstep and EDM community as a whole, we know how much effort artists put into their sets and most people respect that.

Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations we should be on the lookout for?

I have a collab with my boy Echo Drone coming out soon, as well as a new remix of Lock In by Subtronics & Wooli.

How do you decide which tracks or artists to repost? Do you have certain criteria?

If it’s something amazing, I can’t resist. It doesn’t have to fit my genre. Reposting smaller/underground artists and my friend’s work makes me the most happy though for sure.

Can you share a specific track or mix that gained significant traction due to RepostExchange?

My ATLiens Fading Out remix did great, as well as my Become A God flip from Perry Wayne.
