Hailing from Northern California, CALĪZZĪ first stepped into the scene as a music producer after attending Icon Collective in Los Angeles. Her love for DJing grew organically, sparked by an unforgettable night in 2011 seeing Zedd, Tiësto, and Avicii live. Her two mix series (Bassline Therapy and Take Me Somewhere) reflect both sides of her sound: the first built for festival energy and movement, the second a deeper, more melodic journey across house, Afro beats, and international vocals. We caught up with her to talk creative process, influences, and how RepostExchange has supported her along the way.
I actually started as a music producer first, I went to Icon Collective in Los Angeles and learned how to make my own music and then over the past few years, I taught myself how to DJ as well. My first live show as a fan was in SF in 2011 and my first festival was shortly after on NYE and night one I saw Zedd, Tiesto, & AVICII and ever since I have been hooked on dance music, RIP Tim ❤️
I was a bit of a strange kid growing up, my first CD’s (uh oh dating myself haha) were actually soundtracks. I loved Hans Zimmer and James Horner. Cinematic music is still a huge inspiration for me as an artist. But I also loved Pop, Rock and Hip-Hop. Michael Jackson was another huge inspiration.
That is tough! I am lucky to have been to some of my dream festivals to play such as EDCLV, Coachella, Burning Man and Lightning in a Bottle. Electric Forest is one I really want to experience! But if I had to pick just one, I think I would have to go with EDCLV at either Circuit Grounds or Cosmic Meadow. The stages, the lights, the fireworks, and playing for the die hard dance music fans would be a dream come true. I have been five times and it has always been a weekend of inspiration, release and connection that I cherish.
Yes, I often set a vision for myself before recording, such as a specific festival or stage and what type of sound/energy would match it. For example, my Bassline Therapy mixes are more high energy and geared towards my festival sets. While my Take Me Somewhere mixes are more melodic, deep house, afro beats and include a range of international vocals for more of an adventurous but vibey listening experience.
Narrowing down what songs I want to play because I love so many different genres and styles of house music. Hence why I have two separate mix titles so I can still be diverse with my sound selection.
I use my Pioneer Deck (XDJ-RR), it is extremely easy to record on which I love! It is essentially a stripped down CDJ but I look forward to upgrading one day soon so that I can incorporate more channels like a true CDJ-3000. It is also a challenge to be limited to only two channels, having at least a third would be ideal.
Find and play music that is unique and try to avoid playing what is trending and popular. The best DJs play songs/remixes that are unexpected and fresh. If you are going to play something that is already popular try and find a cool remix of the song instead.
I attempt to incorporate if I can but as an artist, I typically stay true to my vision. Of course, I also read the energy of the crowd and pivot if necessary but the goal is to introduce people to music they haven't heard before and will hopefully enjoy! Again, having remixes of popular songs/vocals is a good way to keep people engaged if they are new to your style or sound.
I am creating a ton of new original music under my project, and yes, I also have multiple collabs in the works with a few other artists that I am very excited to share this summer!
It must be something that makes me wanna dance and something that is unique and fresh, whether it's an original or a remix.
I haven’t collaborated yet but I have absolutely made some new connections and friends with other artists and I really enjoy the community.
My recent remix of Forever Yours by AVICII really took off thanks to the love it received from Repost Exchange and its community :)
