With a passion for music that started in her college days, Vybz Empress quickly transitioned from making requests at the DJ booth to commanding the decks herself. Now, she's not only a sought-after international DJ but also an artist working on her first EP. In this exclusive interview, Vybz Empress shares her journey into DJing, the musical influences that shaped her, and how platforms like RepostExchange have helped amplify her sound!
I always loved music, I started out as a dancer. I actually learned how to DJ when I was in college. All the DJs knew me because I was always that girl walking up to the DJ booth with requests. So one day I visited the radio station on campus and I actually sat there and watched them work. That's when I fell in love with the art of DJing. So I asked one of them to teach me and I never stopped.
I have a wide range of influences. Michael Jackson, Vybz Kartel, Sisqo, Ludacris, DMX, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, and Nicki Minaj.
I would DJ any Vybz Kartel concert. His music is SUCH A VIBE. He is my greatest influence and the reason why I named myself VYBZ Empress.
With making a new mix, it all depends on the vibe and the genre. I put myself in the listeners' shoes, then I take it from there.
The track list is definitely the most challenging part because I like to build a vibe. So, song selection order is very important.
Serato DJ to record then Logic Pro and Audacity to edit, if needed.
BE YOURSELF. There's only one you, make the best out of your unique vibe.
Yes, I'm currently working on my very first EP. It will feature different genres of remixes of my hit single, '3'.
I go off the vibe. The vibe has to be on point.
Yes, my hit single, '3'. To this date I have over 10,000 plays, I’ve gained over a thousand followers due to the campaigns and over 400 reposts which I am grateful for.
