In the studio with Cerberuh

This week, we catch up with Mexico City-based future pop producer, Cerberuh!

Jaz from the RepostExchange Team

How long have you been producing music and how did you learn?

My love for music started when I was 13 years old when I bought my first guitar. At 16, I started producing electronic music after going to a concert where I got to see Calvin Harris play.

I took several music classes but I learned to produce music by watching tutorials on YouTube.

What DAW(s) do you use and why?

I use FL Studio because it’s the DAW with which I started to produce and I think it is very easy to use.

I tried using Ableton once, but it was very confusing for me.

What are your favourite pieces of gear and why?

I think my favourite pieces are my guitar and my headphones because most of my ideas start when I play the guitar, and I think that the sound of the guitar makes all the songs sound beautiful, and with my headphones, I can have a very clear perspective of what I am hearing.

What are your favourite software plugins and why?

My favourite plugin is Serum, I think that with Serum you can make very cool and unique sounds.

Nexus because I love the pads it has.

Kickstart because it makes every sound great and OTT because it makes some sounds have a different glow.

How would you summarise your approach/workflow when creating a track?

I think the most important thing is to have good chords, with good chords you can build a great song. I always start with the intro and at the end, I do the drop, I am regularly a perfectionist so I always end up doing more than three versions of a song.

What resources do you use to improve your craft?

Regularly with YouTube channels, but also learned a lot from some comments from other producers on some internet forums, I have also received a lot of advice from producer friends

What is the last YouTube tutorial you watched that you would recommend to other Re-Ex Members?

It was this, but I think all MHA videos are amazing!

What knowledge or advice do you wish you'd learned earlier?

When I started producing I would have liked to know that the mixing is a very important part of the song.

At first, I thought that adding a lot of layers of sound would make the song sound better, but now I know this is a mistake.

And it is not only about being talented, but you must also have a good marketing plan.

What challenges related to making music do you face and how do you overcome them?

Sometimes it is difficult for me to have ideas for a song, to solve it regularly I take a break, watch entertainment videos or go for a walk and then I go back to work on the song.

It is also very sad not to be able to find a label for some songs, but the important thing is not to give up and keep looking.

Can you share any killer tips or techniques?

The most important thing in mastering is the EQ, lowering the frequencies a bit around 500hz will make it sound a bit cleaner.

When producing your music, take into account the stereo image of the song, do not put all your sounds in mono.

Do you try and get feedback or suggestions to improve your music? If so, how?

Yes, sometimes I send my songs to some producer friends on Instagram so they can give me their opinion.

Which track are you most proud of and why?

I'm very proud of my song 'Smoke And Ash' because I did it with Ste, one of my favourite producers and the song was signed by a very big label.

I think it is one of my best works so far and people have liked it a lot.

Has RepostExchange affected the way you make music? If so, how?

It has not affected my way of making music, but it has helped my music reach more people and meet many talented musicians.
