In the studio with Mauri Azari

This week, we catch up with Venezuelan DJ & producer, Mauri Azari

Jaz from the RepostExchange Team

How long have you been producing music and how did you learn?

I have been producing music for nine years. First I started as self-taught with tutorials on YouTube and then I decided to study more professionally in an academy.

What DAW(s) do you use and why?

I use Ableton Live because it seems to me that it is the most complete. Also, when making music live it is very creative if you synchronize it with Traktor.

What are your favourite pieces of gear and why?

For me, my favourite instruments are the Moog Mother-32 and the Moog Subharmonicon although I have many favourite instruments. I prefer these instruments more for their versatility and sound design, which is practically infinite.

What are your favourite software plugins and why?

I definitely like Sylenth and Serum. They are two plugins that I like to design sounds with. They are very good plugins when it comes to designing sounds for any musical genre.

How would you summarise your approach/workflow when creating a track?

I start first with the melodies and then with the bass. Following that, the rest of the drum, and to finish what my ear dictates.

What resources do you use to improve your craft?

I use YouTube, SoundCloud and most social networks. Especially Instagram.

What is the last YouTube tutorial you watched that you would recommend to other Re-Ex Members?

What knowledge or advice do you wish you'd learned earlier?

How to train your ear and mix!

Can you share any killer tips or techniques?

My best advice would be, if you are blocked and cannot create music, stop producing for a few days listen to other artists and be inspired by them.

Do you use any online tools to assist with the production process?

Yes, I usually use Splice for samples.

Do you try and get feedback or suggestions to improve your music? If so, how?

I like to receive suggestions especially when I meet some colleagues who are in the musical world, I always think that two heads are better than one.

Which track are you most proud of and why?

I am really proud of 'Let Spirit', it is a track that I have loved a lot even though my musical tastes are much darker.

Has RepostExchange affected the way you make music? If so, how?

It has not affected the way I make music, but it has positively affected the way I expose my music so that other people can hear my work.
